This week, KOAN Sound and Minnesota are bringing the funk and the bass to Virginia Beach and DC. KOAN Sound spiritually adopt the Buddhist anecdote their name holds in creating both the brutal and the beautiful. Minnesota brings the funk in his own way, unleashing music both fresh and retro through a myriad of CDJs, analog synths, and vinyl. Here’s the run down.

KOAN Sound first broke though with the Funk Blaster EP and its follow-up, Adventures of Mr Fox. Gaining support and scene presence courtesy of Zane Lowe and Skrillex, their first ventures took funk and glitch-hop on a stuttery, filthy trip.

Though their capacity for creating rage-worthy material is strong, KOAN Sound have also delved into ambient, liquid music while maintaining a distinct sound and vibe. Their collaborative EP with Asa and their most recent release, Dynasty, show that the duo can can birth beautiful, emotional music just as well as grimy material.

Minnesota, while not taking inspiration from any Buddhist mantras, is still plenty soulful in his music production. One of the steadfast names in electro-soul, Minnesota’s wompy bass puts new spirit in the jazz, funk, and soul-inspired genre.

To top it off, Minnesota’s melodies are some of the best in the game, as evident in his collaboration with melodic master Seven Lions and vocalist Mimi Page.

We have yet another big week here at Steez Promo, starting off tomorrow, Wednesday May 21st with Ed Rush and Optical at Ultrabar!

Ed Rush is one of the current leaders of new-school drum and bass. Keeping the familiar DnB sound that we all know and love and infusing it with fresh new sounds, Ed Rush has been taking DnB to new levels for the past couple of years. Then in 1998, Mr. Rush and Optical decided to team up and give us their genre-defying blend of music. They’ve been doing business ever since with their own record label, Virus.

Check out Ed Rush and Opticals’ Summer 2012 Mix here:

Ed Rush and Optical always keep the tunes fresh and will surely continue to evolve the sounds of drum and bass; this show is not one to miss! Stay tuned for more previews for the rest of this jam packed week!

Grab tickets to Ed Rush & Optical Wednesday, May 21 @ Ultrabar in Washington, D.C. here and join the conversation on Facebook here.

MEGA Spotlight: Carnage x GTA

This Saturday is about to be massive! Steez Promo and Glow are teaming up this Saturday to welcome Carnage and GTA back to DC in style.

When hometown hero Carnage visited the DMV this past November, 930 Club was completely sold out. If you’re like me, and haven’t been lucky enough to catch Carnage live, here’s 2014 Ultra set. Familiarize yourself with his latest tunes and get hyped for Saturday’s show!

GTA’s set from Ultra was hot & diverse, but that’s to be expected since the duo hails from Miami. They possess an unbeatable combination of dirty, sexy, hyped-up beats with hip-hop leanings and sometimes even a tropical vibe. Toth & Mejia refer to themselves as producers with no borders; they have been known to experiment with trap, house, moombahton, funky electro, booty bass, salsa, and pretty much anything they can put their own flavor on.

Want more tunes to jam to? Check out these awesome artist’s Soundcloud links to learn all of their latest tracks.

Now that you’re up to date on GTA & Carnage’s music, it’s time to purchase your Mega Glow DC ticket and join in on the mayhem that is about to go down at Echostage! Grab a ticket here and join the conversation on Facbeook here.

New England, brace yourself for the “Psycho Circus Tour” this weekend! Bro Safari, Paper Diamond, and friends will be heading your way this Saturday, May 10th, so how about some Artist Spotlights to get you pumped?

Bro Safari – once a member of drum ‘n’ bass group Evol Intent – has played such a huge role in the Moombahton movement that you might as well call him ‘King Moombahton’. Check out his set from Ultra this year if you don’t believe me.

Colorado-based producer Paper Diamond is taking EDM to the next level with his musical genius skills. With a sound unlike anyone in the game, the sounds that come out of this man’s mind must come from outer space. Check out his Diplo and Friends Mix:

Ookay may be relatively new in the trap game, but that doesn’t mean his game isn’t on point. His most recent Beatport release made it to all the way to #10, gaining him support from huge names like Borgore, RL Grime, and Flosstradamus.

UFO! is another great addition to the lineup; I’ll let his music speak for itself.

Mothership Tour Artist Spotlight: Milo & Otis

Summer in the DMV is getting a massive kick-off with Skrillex’s 2014 Mothership Tour. The man himself will be stopping in Baltimore and Richmond, bringing along a hand-selected legion of bass artists. We’re going to bring you spotlights on all of them, and we’re starting with Milo & Otis. While they’re a newer name, the duo chosen to round off the roster is anything but amateur.

You may not have heard of Milo & Otis, but the two are hardly green in the scene. The duo is made up of DJ/producer Killagraham and DJ Nymz, who have both released music on OWSLA, Never Say Die, and Kindergarden Recordings. Thanks to these past experience apart, Milo & Otis know their way around the decks.

They possess equally laudable production prowess.

Adding diversity to their catalog, their hilariously titled “Unoriginal Mixes” see Milo & Otis editing underground classics to mesh well with their music.

And if you were wondering how they got their name:

milootis

We’re not joking.

Grab tickets to The Mothership Tour 2014 ft. Skrillex w/ Dillon Francis, What So Not, and Milo & Otis on Sun 6/8 @ Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore here and on Mon 6/9 @ Brown’s Island in Richmond here.
